Structure & Chaos Through the Tantric Lens

Structure & Chaos in the natural world
Structure & Chaos in the natural world

The interplay of Structure & Chaos is one of the dynamics of Masculine & Feminine that shows up both within us and out in the world. The purpose of this article is to give a bit of explanation of this dynamic, highlighting what it is, what it isn’t and how these energies can work together in a healthy and exciting way.

Let’s peel back the words a bit here and inquire to see what our initial reaction to them is when we check in with ourselves. Prior to my training in Tantra and energetic polarities, if someone had of asked me what these words meant, I would have said chaos is destructive, a force that wreaks havoc in our world and structure is what is required to keep things in line, making sure we don’t make a mess of things. That’s because I, like many others, viewed these two energies through the lens of separation where chaos is simply running amuck with no structure to support it. But what if, instead of forcing a structure, we allowed the chaos to inform the direction of the structure?

Chaos in its purest sense is creative potential. Can you think of moments on the dance floor when your body would begin to tune in with the sound of the beats rippling throughout the space. A certain aliveness would flow through you and perhaps you’d start to dance, you’d start to move in a way that felt good, moving in rhythm with the dance and perhaps you’d even begin to lose yourself in the ecstasy of that experience. This excitement that is moving through you – that’s your chaos. The way you move gives the chaos a structure to flow but it’s all in response to that ripple of chaos within you that informs how you move your body. When there is an allowance of that chaos and a healthy structure to create a pathway for that energy, it is absolutely blissful. The bliss we experience is the union of the masculine structure with the feminine chaos. When we are in bliss, all worries seem to fall away, time disappears, and we catch a glimpse of a beautiful felt sense of infinity within us.

Another example of chaos in action is out in nature. The natural world is a perfect demonstration of chaos in action, and it doesn’t necessarily mean storms and raging seas. Nature is in a constant dance of chaos and structure.  The example that comes to mind for me in this moment is a seed. Imagine a seed in the ground, pulsing with life and pure potential. It has a divine blueprint, a reason for being just like all of us. As the sun shines from above, as waters nourish the ground, the seed pulses more with life until it breaks open. Small green tendrils emerge from the once tiny pod and begin to travel upward toward the world above, following the structure of the ground that holds it in place. Its roots begin to drop down, anchoring it in the soil.

A final example I will share about chaos and structure in action and one that I absolutely love is how it is experienced in tantric intimacy. As humans, we have both polarities of masculine and feminine within us. We are whole unto ourselves. We don’t need to find our “better half” to become complete. However, in intimacy, since we as human beings are hard wired for connection, in order for connection to take place, there needs to be a union on masculine and feminine where two people become one. For this to happen, the masculine partner needs to let go of their feminine side and the feminine partner needs to let go of their masculine side. The masculine partner becomes the structure, and the feminine partner becomes pure chaos. The structure and direction of their lovemaking is a response to the chaos flowing from the feminine partner. Maybe it’s wild and passionate, maybe it’s slow and sensual. But it’s all in response to the feminine. Unless it’s your intention to play in the sandbox of domination and submission (which is also a fun experiment!), the masculine is not calling the shots here. As the feminine partner in most of my lovemaking experience with previous partners, my greatest joy is going into my full chaos. My body moves, I moan, and I feel this amazing energy rising from within me. Provided the one in the masculine is moving in a way that holds the structure and stays in connection with me, I can feel myself expanding and have had moments where the pleasure within me has lifted into my heart and I begin to weep in response. It all flows from me because in that space of pure connection, I feel seen, loved, and am completely safe in their arms.

Safe, seen, and loved… In a world where the feminine has been supressed for far too long in our hyper masculine culture. What if we responded to chaos in this way, both within ourselves and out in the world? If kindness is not front and centre, connection is not possible. So, as you go out into the world, consider how you can respond to your own chaos in a way that is loving and kind. What is that pure potential within you calling for? What is the energy contained in that seed that knows it’s true design, it’s true blueprint, and how can your masculine rise to support that mission?

Wishing you so much love and connection, my friends. Be well.
